Many of these pubs are haunted and some are over 1000 years old and stories about them have been collected in three books by Donald Stuart.
There are over 50,000 pubs, inns and taverns throughout the UK, excluding N. Ireland, offering a warm welcome, food and drink to local people, tourists and travellers. They range from simple beer and cider houses to opulent inns.
These inns were originally built for royalty, pilgrims and priests, traveling the country and over 500 are reputed to be haunted by such historic characters as Bonnie Prince Charlie, Florence Nightingale, the actor Richard Burton, King Arthur, Hanging Judge Jeffreys, Oliver Cromwell, previous landlords, highwaymen, pirates, hangmen, witches, Ladies in Grey and The Devil Himself. Some are also haunted by black dogs, white palfreys, pigs and even a cockerel.
There are also inns connected with the paranormal, Pilgrim Fathers, American and English civil wars and Diana, Princess of Wales.
In
each book there is some history of heraldry, royalty, the civil
war, odd pub names and local legends.
Some are noted for being the smallest or largest in the land. All are illustrated with photographs and drawings.
